i’m back. i missed tumblr.

i went to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this weekend to visit my brother. i really enjoyed my stay. what a great little quaint campus. reminded me of a smaller version of my alma mater, Illinois State.

we went to a college hockey game. wow…. was that fun!   i’m envious of how much everyone loves hockey up there. it really is their football. the band even goes to the games and everyone really gets into hockey!

my favorite part about the school was the mandatory recycling.  if a student is to throw recycling into the trash, their floor receives a proration charge. awesome! none of those kids will be throwing recycling in the trash for the rest of their lives! and, outside of the dorms, students can recycle cans for cash!

until next time,

cdn.

Microsoft To Consume Skype

I’m glad I don’t utilize skype like so many people do. Sorry to those that do use the free service. Microsoft will continue to battle against Apple to get an even bigger share of the computer pie in our wonderful capitalistic “free market.” Watch out for fees and IT changes that will cause pain to traditional skype services.

“Skype just might be the most wonderful application on the Internet. Now it will be owned by Microsoft, which is buying the Internet telephone company from a set of private investors for $8.5 billion. It’s a stunning price, since those same investors bought the company only 18 months ago at a valuation of $2.75 billion.

But for me and 170 million other customers who love Skype, the scary aspect is this: Microsoft will screw it up.

Article - Lyons Skype Microsoft

Look at what they did with Danger Inc., an early mobile device maker that created the Sidekick, a really cool early smartphone. Microsoft bought it, smothered it, drove away the talent, and basically killed Danger in its crib. (Ironically, one of the people who left was Danger co-founder Andy Rubin, who went on to create Android, which he sold to Google—which didn’t screw it up. Now it’s taking over the mobile phone businesswhile Microsoft, which once had a lead in that field, is struggling to stay alive.)”

One of the truly amazing and depressing things about the health reform debate is the persistence of fear-mongering over “socialized medicine” even though we already have a system in which the government pays substantially more medical bills (47% of the total) than the private insurance industry (35%).

In a way, this is the flip side of the persistent belief that the free market can cure healthcare, even though there are no places where it actually has; people also believe that government-provided insurance can’t work, even though there are many places where it does - and one of those places is the United States of America.

Robert Reich: Paul Ryan's Plan, the Coming Shutdown, and What's Really at Stake

robertreich:

I was there in 1995 when the government closed because of a budget stalemate. I had to tell most of the Labor Department’s 15,600 employees to go home and not return the next day. I also had to tell them I didn’t know when they’d next get a paycheck.

There were two shutdowns, actually, rolling…
